This Ruins Marriages

Drinking and driving destroys thousands of lives each year. Alcohol has a way of “sneaking up on you” sometimes and the effects of alcohol can be unpredictable. Some nights you may have two beers and feel a buzz, while other nights you’re almost at ten and still feel unsatisfied. To save this marriage people try to cope.  Binge drinking is common among drinkers. It seems that most people either don’t care for alcohol or like drinking alcohol TOO much, but it should not be tolerated when it claims so many innocent victims. Drinking with set limits and a sensible transportation plan is fine, but excessively drinking and driving someone off the road has become a serious social problem that must be targeted through a variety of community strategies.

There are many myths about drinking and driving. The first is that beer contains less alcohol content than other types of booze; therefore, it’s ok to indulge. The truth is that your body may absorb beer a little slower, but one 12-ounce beer, one 4-ounce glass of wine and one mixed drink with 1/4 80-proof liquor have the same alcohol content. Therefore, it is no surprise that most binge drinking is done with beer. Secondly, some people think that drinking coffee, using the bathroom, eating something or taking a cold shower will “sober them up.” Unfortunately, time is the only cure. Another myth is that alcohol has a universal effect, when, in reality, the effects of alcohol hit everyone differently depending on age, weight, food consumed, genes and other factors.

While you can’t control complete strangers, there are still a few things you can do about drinking and driving. Wearing a seatbelt is critical. If you’re having a party, be aware of how much alcohol consumption is going on and call a cab for those friends who are binge drinking. Never trust someone who has been drinking alcohol to drive you around. Offer to be the designated driver sometimes. You can report drunk drivers on your cell phone by calling the police and giving them the license plate number, vehicle description and direction of travel. Try to avoid driving from 3-5 am or when most bars are letting out. Keep a safe distance from erratic drivers and change up your route if you have to. There are a lot of crazies on the road!
