Detox diets are designed to clean out your system. If you are considering a detox diet, here are a few facts that you should be aware of.

You should first consult with your physician or other health care professional before beginning a detox diet. You want to make sure that there are no issues that might prevent you from completing a detox diet like medications or health conditions. Also, you can discuss any medications or herbal therapies that you might plan to take during the diet to make sure that there are no reasons to avoid those particular treatments.

Next, detox diet programs are  not designed to help you lose weight but to help you cleanse your system. For the few days you are on the diet, you will have to give up certain foods and take some laxatives to help clean out the intestine and liver.

While you are on the diet, you will eat many fruits and vegetables. In most cases, these are unprocessed and raw since cooking will remove essential minerals and vitamins. Persons who are able to successfully finish the diet say that they feel healthier and have increased levels of energy.

Detox diets are not recommended for people with certain health conditions especially patients suffering from diabetes, eating disorders, heart disease and other chronic conditions. This should also not be done by pregnant or nursing mothers.

Teenagers should not also try the detox diet because this will rob them of vitamins and minerals which are important for their rapid growth and development.

Detox diets should only be done once or twice a year because it can become addicting. Some have compared regular detox diets to things like smoking or drugs where it is hard to give the habit up and this could lead to health programs like eating disorders, heart conditions, or even death.

There can be side effects from a detox diet such as acne, headaches, fatigue, hunger, and irritability.  You may also experience these when you decide to take detox supplements as most of the ingredients are actually laxatives. These can cause frequent trips to the bathroom which can be messy. You should drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration, mineral imbalances, or any other problems associated with the digestive sytem.

Since the detox diet will only last several days, you may feel that you have lost weight but in reality, you only have lost water and some muscle. Any weight you may have lost while on the detox diet, you will regain when you begin eating regular food again.

There have not been any studies which prove the effectiveness of the detox diet. In fact, there is no evidence which proves that such toxins were actually removed especially when your liver and kidneys are functioning properly before you started the program.

As you can see, there are some positive and negative issues when it comes to detox diets. Now that you know what these are, you can decide for yourself whether this is something you want to try or not. Remember to consult you physician should you decide to start a detox diet because there are certain people how should not try the diet based on their age and health status.

Just remember that besides using detox diets, the body has natural ways of removing toxins so you can let nature take care of them or use a detox diet to force it out of your system.
